Abstract

Given the great importance of carotenoids in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries as natural dyes and as bioactive substances that reduce the risks of degenerative diseases, studies to optimize the extraction and purification of these are important for the replacement of synthetic dyes. The production of carotenoids by the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis is an intracellular process and the rupture of the cell wall is fundamental for its recovery. Recently the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis emerged as a potential producer of carotenoids, however due to its nature, the development of effective breaking techniques and integration with extractive techniques for recovery and separation are fundamental to the success of the production. The present project establishes an integrated set of downstream process techniques that allow the extraction of carotenoids from this yeast without significant loss of its biological activity. To do this, cellular disruption methods will be integrated, applying green and biocompatible solvents, less toxic for extraction.
