The primary objective of this research is to analyse the geostrategic interests of the United Kingdom in the South Atlantic taking in account the country's support for the "out-of-area" operations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Moreover, it is going to be analysed the importance of the British military presence in the South Atlantic to the British Government from 1990 to 2015. The United Kingdom is traditionally regarded as a great power, with significant military, economic and political weight in the international system, is one of the permanent members of the United Nations' Security Council, one of the most active members of NATO and the closest ally of the United States. These factors give the United Kingdom significant relative freedom of action in the South Atlantic where it is the only foreign military power, beyond the United States, to have a permanent presence in the region. Furthermore, the United Kingdom possesses a system of military power projection, especially naval power, based on its Overseas Territories, remnants of the British Empire, which have no territorial or populational expressiveness but are located on regions of geostrategic relevance, being one example the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic.
