Abstract

I intend to investigate how the Catholic Church reacted to the abolition of Brazilian slavery from an anticlerical nineteenth century. The canonization of Pedro Claver in January of 1888 may have been a response of the religious institution when entering a discourse of freedom to rewrite its past and insert itself in a new future, where state and religion would remain separated.
