Housing complex of Mooca: the living forms and the social habitation in São Paulo (1940-2018)

Abstract

The purposed research intends to study the living forms in the Housing Complex of Mooca, Paulo Antunes Ribeiro's project of 1946 promoted by the Instituto de Aposentadoria e Pensões dos Industriários (IAPI) in east zone of São Paulo. The investigation is inserted in the Project "The house, the complex and the city: domesticity and living forms in the Brazilian modern social habitation, 1937-1964", authored by Prof. Dr. Flávia Brito do Nascimento. In this way, there is the intent to understand the relations between issues raised by Brazilian modern architects, as the concept of minimum habitation and the rationalization of projects, and the social and economic context of transformation involving the 30's and the 40's, when the Housing Complex of Mooca was projected and built. For a better understanding of this habitational project, it is necessary to investigate Paulo Antunes Ribeiro's track in this field and to study the importance of the IAPs acting in habitational production of the referred period. Starting from these general studies, the Housing Complex of Mooca is selected as a specific object of the research, with the purpose of understanding it inserted in the moment of its conception and studying its trajectory through the years of use until 2018, analyzing the relation between the residents and the space and investigating the challenges of its preservation.
