The research internship in Portugal envisages the development of the work initiated in "'Me with a pick and cement, you with your silence': The sound of Fontainhas in Pedro Costas' trilogy" (process no. 2018/02221-8). In this project, we seek to analyze the sound design of the films Bones (1997), In Vanda's Room (2000) and Colossal Youth (2006), directed by the Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa, in order to investigate the importance that is reserved to the sound track in Costa's aesthetic propositions. The internship is expected to take place over three weeks in Porto, where ESAP is located, and a week in Lisbon, where are located both the Cinemateca Portuguesa and the people who will be interviewed. The internship will be profitable due to the opportunity of guidance on the part of Prof. Dr. Carlos Melo Ferreira, who collects innumerous publications in the area of cinema and has recently written and launched, more specifically last year, a book on Pedro Costa. Carlos Melo Ferreira is linked to the Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP), where he is an Integrated Researcher at the Centro de Estudos Arnaldo Araújo (CEAA) - an internal structure of ESAP. In addition, he is a member of both the Associação de Investigadores da Imagem em Movimento (AIM) and the Editorial Board of DOC On-line magazine. The dialogue to be established with researchers from the CEAA cinema group of studies, whose investigations focus on the history of Portuguese cinema, will illuminate the historical and aesthetic aspects of the country's cinematography, so that it will be become possible to situate Pedro Costa's work in this context of production. In using the space and the collection of the library of the ESAP, as well as of the library of the Cinemateca Portuguesa, located in Lisbon, we seek to discover pertinent bibliographic material. In addition, the Cinemateca makes available, through prior scheduling, audiovisual material for the "research viewings", in which the researcher has the opportunity to watch film archives that belong to the national archive Arquivo Nacional de Imagens em Movimento (ANIM). We hope to be able to watch properly (in good conditions) the three films that compose our body of research, in an specific space for this purpose.During the last week of internship, to take place in Lisbon, it is intended to interview the filmmaker Pedro Costa; Luís Miguel Oliveira, film critic and programmer from the Cinemateca Portuguesa; Olivier Blanc, sound recordist of the film Colossal Youth; and Rui Cidra (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), Ethnomusicology researcher that is specialized in Cape Verdean musical culture in the diaspora context. Bones, In Vanda's Room and Colossal Youth are films that portray the daily life and social and affective experiences of Cape Verdean immigrants that reside in the metropolitan region of Lisbon, so that the dialogue with this researcher will clarify historical, social and cultural aspects that permeate the Cape Verdean songs used in the film's sound tracks.
