Coronary artery disease is one of the major causes of death in the world, and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is an important treatment strategy. The majority of CABGs use cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), which improves the technical quality of the surgery, but increase the risk of complications, such as acute kidney injury (AKI) that can occur in 30% of the patients. AKI is associated to worst prognosis and high mortality. Both, CPB-induced reperfusion injury and AKI share pathophysiological mechanisms, such as increased oxidative stress. Although the diagnosis of AKI is made due to changes in creatinine values, among other factors, this is not an early marker of AKI. Investigation of new risk markers for AKI may help in the prevention or early detection of this complication. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship of serum lipid hydroperoxide concentration, which is a marker of oxidative damage, and activity of antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase, and the occurrence of AKI in patients submitted to CABG. Eighty patients undergoing CABG with CPB will be included, who will have blood samples collected before, during and after the surgical procedure. All patients will be monitored throughout the hospitalization for the diagnosis of AKI. The diagnosis of AKI will be made by KDIGO criteria. The blood will be used to determine lipid hydroperoxide concentration catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes activities.
