Abstract

Today there is a broad agreement that the construction of an environmentally sustainable and a socially fairer sociotechnical order depends upon the incorporation in the technical design of ethical-political values other than the currently hegemonic ones. Therefore, it is acknowledged that engineering education, in which value-based elements are traditionally obliterated, must be modified. However, even though changes of this kind, in the realm of teaching, research, and community outreach, have been practiced in engineering courses in Brazil and abroad, there is little research about their performance and institutional conditions in the light of theoretical reflections concerning the technological development. That is the case, for instance, when it comes to the understanding that new design styles can be achieved on the basis of a diversification of the non-instrumental, cognitive or ethical-political elements that affect/conform this activity, and that such new design styles enable solutions that, without them, would be unconceivable or non-implementable. In this post-doctorate, I will focus on the case of the Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA), which has been experimenting innovations in teaching and community outreach since 2009. I aim with this work not only to examine and evaluate such initiatives, but also to collaborate with the faculty team in charge to their advancement. Thus, on the one hand, this work aims to find ways to better implement socially responsible socio-technical design, integrating it in the engineering education at ITA, i.e., institutionalizing it. On the other hand, I also seek to improve the understanding of the technical design in itself, as well as of the related role of non-instrumental and non-scientific elements there.
