Abstract

The present project aims at the development of electrochemical and colorimetricsensors, based on nanofibers modified with nanomaterials that can aid and improve thedetection of mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by a largenumber of fungi. Among mycotoxins, aflatoxins (FA) are considered to be the mosttoxicogenic fungal metabolites with carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic andimmunosuppressive effects. The aim of this project is to develop accurate and costeffective sensors using polymer nanofibers modified with distinct nanomaterials, aimingat aflatoxins detection. The sensorial nanometric platforms will be characterizedthrough experimental techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM), ScanningElectron Microscopy (SEM), Thermal Analysis (DSC and TGA) and InfraredSpectroscopy (FTIR). Electrochemical detection will be carried out usingelectrochemical techniques, i.e., cyclic voltammetry , squarewave voltammetry , andamperometric in standard solutions, and colorimetric detection will be performed usingthe UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy technique. Subsequently, bothdeveloped sensors will be tested on actual samples.
