Abstract

Morphology study of root canal systems is essential for a correct diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of root canal treatment. There are several methods to study root canals, including Cone-Beam Computed Tomography - a sophisticated device for obtaining images from head and neck region. This method allows 3D reproduction of dental sections and visualization of layered structures, specially mineralized tissues. On Endodontics, Cone-Beam Computed Tomography is used to perform periapical diagnosis, evaluate root canal anatomy and flaws related to root resorption injuries, clarify suspected perforations and planning root canal treatment. Researches show that root canals morphologies have variations on each group of teeth, especially in mandibular teeth among different ethnic groups, as well as on each person. Therefore, the aim of the current project is to analyze mandibular root canals using tomography and classifying them as its type, number and location. One hundred tomographic exams of patients of both gender with sound mandibular anterior teeth, with completely developed roots and without resorption will be analyzed. The teeth will be classified according to Vertucci (1974) criteria, followed by notes on roots and canals amount and their settings. Results obtained will be submitted to normality test for future choice of statistical test using SPSS software, using descriptive form. The expectation, at the end of the study, is to elucidate the incidence of root canals and number of roots of permanent mandibular anterior teeth, correlating the group of teeth, with ethnical groups. These data will be important to support diagnosis, treatment plan and prognosis on Endodontics.
