Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Psychological disorders correspond to an important public health problem and its incidence has increased exponentially in the last decades. On the other hand, the practice of physical activity has been associated with a better mental health condition due to its physical and psychological benefits. However, different relationships between objective and subjective measures of physical activity as well as their different intensities are not consistent in the literature regarding anxiety and depression symptoms in the adult population. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the physical activity practice measured objectively and subjectively with symptoms of depression in a representative sample of adults. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with a sample that will be composed of individuals aged 18 years or older residing in the municipality of Santo Anastácio / SP, selected in a randomized and representative sample process, according to the area census tracts of the municipality and its demographic proportionality, where the neighborhoods, streets, blocks and households of each sector will be randomized. The symptoms of depression will be evaluated through the HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) questionnaire, using the information in the block of this instrument referring to the symptoms of depression. The physical activity practice will be measured objectively by means of accelerometry by the Actigraph WGT3X-BT device and subjectively by means of the Baecke questionnaire, which estimates the habitual physical activity in the areas of work or occupation, leisure time, sport and leisure, in addition to of total sum to global levels of physical activity. The socioeconomic level will be evaluated through the Brazilian Classification of Economic Classification and stratified into classes from A to E. Simple and multiple linear regression models will be created to analyze the relationship of depression symptoms to the practice of objective and subjective physical activity, with adjustment for possible confounding variables (gender, age and socioeconomic status). The analyzes will be performed by the SPSS v.25 program, with statistical significance set at p <0.05 and 95% confidence interval.
