Droplet size distributions (DSDs) determine many characteristics of clouds, such as the onset of precipitation and cloud glaciation, and also influence the effect of clouds on radiation. During the proposed Research Internship Abroad, we intend to analyze the effects of turbulence on the evolution of DSDs in Large Eddy Simulations (LES) with bin microphysics, thus studying the reasons for DSD broadening in real clouds and deepening our ideas about improving the representation of the Gamma parameters on bulk parameterizations. It would provide a more complete characterization of warm phase processes in the Gamma phase space. This research would involve LES using WRF with explicit microphysics as well as comparisons with WRF simulations using bulk microphysics schemes. The simulations would allow us to study the behavior of DSDs in idealized growing cumulus using 2D and 3D turbulent warm bubble cases in WRF. To tackle the nonphysical DSD broadening in bin-microphysics parameterizations related to numerical diffusion in physical space, we would use various model horizontal and vertical grid spacing. (AU)
