The Brazilian historiographical production of the end of the nineteenth century is marked by the concern to write a history that surrounds the regions at a national level. In parallel to the productions of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute and composing the means of intellectual production, several ways of making history about the conflicts that motivated political, social and geographic thinking about the nation were written and thought. Among these, this work focuses on the episode of Canudos and the Paraguayan War. The objective of this project is to establish a comparison between two of these narratives: Os Sertões of Euclides da Cunha and A Retirada da Laguna, by Alfredo de Taunay. Following the narrative process of these two authors, it is the purpose of this project to put the books in parallel in front of the discussion of the History of Historiography. In this line of thought, we propose to identify the elements that compose and base these writings in order to understand them as part of the historiographic regime of the period (1874 - 1902), highlighting the delimitations between historical and literary writing.
