We propose a six-month visit to the Centre for Quantum Engineering (CQE) at Aalto University in Finland for the realization of a research project under the supervision of Dr. Mikko Motonen. This internship will focus on the theoretical study of open quantum systems augmented by experimental implementations in superconducting circuits. Particularly, the student will work on the proper description of open quantum systems beyond the usual Born-Markov approximations. The main approach here will be through stochastic Liouville-von Neumann equations, which are well suitable for strong coupling between system and environment and time-dependent parameters. Possible applications of this study include the development of better strategies for fast initialization of qubits in a quantum computer and new perspectives for the production of desired states through reservoir engineering. The CQE has several groups working simultaneously on theoretical and experimental research, including the Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD) group directed by Dr. Motonen. Therefore, this internship will allow the student to be in contact with varied current research topics on quantum technologies.
