Abstract

In the context of Brazil - a developing country whose area of rural extension and climatic condition are favorable to the diversified production of agricultural crops -, the production of crops with the Geographic Identification and the use of certifications for quality (and that involve sustainability) in socially disadvantaged areas can lead to rural development, through a process of social innovation, with the reconnection of actors, revaluation of the territory and quality production. However, as Bund et al. (2015) and Reeder et al. (2012) analyse the growing importance of social innovation in political circles and academia makes it necessary to explore ways in which metrics can be applied in addition to economic factors. Still according to Benedek et al. (2016), empirical analysis shows that there is a significant correlation between the economic and innovation potential of a given region; this is because the more innovative territories would outperform regions lacking innovation. Like this, based on the importance of quality production systems and the need for a better investigation of the social innovation indicators (SII) at the regional level to reach rural development, this project has the problematization: What indicators of social innovation could be used to analyze quality production systems, with a view to contributing to rural development (including economic gains)? The objective is the analysis of the SII and the cases (experiences) of the quality production systems, proposing a theoretical model of measurement of social innovation, aiming at the rural development. Specifically, it aims to: analyze existing SII; to evaluate the characteristics of social and economic valuation in quality production systems of developed countries; to propose a model of analysis of SII that can be applied in quality systems in developing countries based on learning from quality production systems of the developed countries. The methodological procedures will involve: a theoretical investigation on the theme of SII; a bibliographical survey about the experiences of agricultural production systems focused on quality; documentary research; the direct observation of the researcher in some quality production Italian systems; proposition of the model of analysis of SII, applicable to quality systems in developing countries, based on learning of quality production systems of developed countries. The development of this research would bring theoretical and empirical contributions from which includes indicators of the systemic environment and the intangible aspects of innovations (such as social innovation) in rural development territories, fomenting public and private policies in developed and developing countries.
