Abstract

The areas of remaining vegetation are part of the natural life support systems and even when inserted in the urban context present important aesthetic, social and ecological functions, such as: improvement the urban climate; equilibrium of the humidity index and attenuation of air; improvement in the quantity and quality of available water through reduction of runoff and control of erosion processes; aid in the processes of nutrient cycling and accumulation and decomposition of organic matter and so on. Therefore, the present project aims to identify, map and determine the environmental quality of the remaining natural vegetation areas present in two watersheds, but with distinct climatic and vegetation characteristics, one of them in Brazil (Campinas/SP) and another in Coimbra/Portugal. To do so, they will be evaluated according to environmental indicators and landscape metrics, such as total and nuclear area, connectivity and land use. It will also be used geoprocessing techniques, remote sensing and statistical analysis as auxiliary instruments. With the results obtained, the project aims to determine if the pattern of spatial distribution of remnants of natural vegetation is similar in both study areas, as well as to identify if it is possible to construct a standardized Environmental Vulnerability Index to be applied both in remnants of tropical forest (Brazil) and other vegetation phytophysiognomies. It is intended that this study will help the environmental and urban management at the municipal level in relation to the remnants of natural vegetation and its potentialities and weaknesses. (AU)
