In vitro calogenesis as alternative to phyllanthine and hypophyllanthine production in Phyllantus amarus

Abstract

The production of secondary metabolites of medicinal plants has increased its importance in the last decade. At the same time as the knowledge about its pharmacological properties gains space and market, the agriculture systems become the main source of these complex substances aiming its use for different purposes. In this context, the use of biotechnological techniques such as in vitro cultivation, associated with the induction of the production of secondary metabolites, requires knowledge on aspects related to plant physiology and that result in efficient methods of plant development control, associated to the induction of the production of secondary metabolites induced by chemical or physical agents, also known as elicitors. Thus, the present project aims at the in vitro production of secondary metabolites phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin obtained from Phyllanthus amarus species, using as tissues callus obtained from nodal segments. In order to do so, we are proposing experiments that involve: the establishment of a protocol aiming at obtaining callus for the production of vegetable mass, and then the tests with elicitors, aiming to evaluate the induction of the production of these metabolites in the callus. The system will be compared to a system of cultivation of potted plants under greenhouse conditions. In this way, it will be possible to evaluate the differences and viability of in vitro metabolite production compared to a conventional production system.
