Public spaces and consumption: the impacts of the economic logic on the urban space production and its implications for the "revitalization design" of the central urban area of Presidente Prudente/SP

Abstract

This proposal articulates the research of scientific initiation that preceded the elaboration of this project, "Changes in consumption/changes in urban space: popular stores, traditional centers and Internet sales in the years 2000", in which space practices and economic logics linked to consumption in and of space are taken as possibilities to make the reading of the urban transformations currently under way. The specific focus of this research project at master's level lies in analyzing the extent to which socioeconomic dynamics have influenced the actions of municipal public power regarding the production of urban space in the center of Presidente Prudente, from the context of ease of access to the credit and consequent increase in consumption provided by the public policies of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011). In order to understand the processes currently underway in the public spaces of these central areas, we intend to associate bibliographical surveys with the periodical field work, valuing the empirical-theoretical relations for the obtained results to be analyzed from a predominantly qualitative perspective.
