To ensure the safety of the system and meet the reliability and power quality indices for consumers, distribution companies must have tools to optimize the operation and planning of their networks. This research project considers the resolution of two correlated problems. The first problem is the optimization of the operation of distribution systems for load restoration. In this case, the objective is to find the state of operation of the network in a situation of contingency, in order to maximize the service to the loads through the operation of switches and devices installed in the network, such as capacitor banks, voltage regulators, on-load tap changers, and dispatching the distributed generation. In the second problem, the objective is to plan the network in an integrated way, considering the allocation of all the previously mentioned devices, so that it is possible to carry out the efficient restoration of the load. For both problems, complete mathematical models of optimization, to be solved by commercial solvers, as well as variable neighborhood search metaheuristics, to be applied to complex systems, will be developed. In addition, in both problems, elements that will be present in modern distribution networks, such as renewable sources and energy storage systems, as well as electric vehicles, must be considered, and for this, the formulations will be extended to consider uncertainties. The proposed optimization techniques should be used to solve systems available in the literature, with different degrees of complexity.
