Abstract

Graphene Quantum Dots (GQD) are graphene fragments consisting of one or a few layer shaving lateral dimensions smaller than 100 nm. GQD possess the appealing characteristics of graphene, viz. high surface area to volume ratio and high electrical conductivity, presenting also photoluminescence properties due to the quantum confinement and edge effects. The first synthesis of GQD was reported in the literature in 2010, which opens a wide window of opportunities to scientific and technological research on the synthesis, properties and application of this material. Due to the outstanding properties, GQD can be applied as a constituent material of hybrid sensors. Chemical sensors find applications in various sectors, including Agriculture, which demands technological solutions to increase food and energy production with mitigation of environmental impacts. The use of chemical sensors helps optimizing the available resources and can monitor residues released into the environment by anthropogenic influence. In this project, we propose the synthesis of GQD by simpler and novel routesand the development of sensors based on GQD for application in the detection of analytesof interest for agribusiness. The platforms will be investigated and characterized by distinct physical-chemical techniques aiming to evaluate the influence of GQD in the responses obtained by the sensors, in order to design sensors with improved sensitivity and detection limit.
