Abstract

In this project, we propose to use MUSE/VLT data of the intriguing merging galaxy NGC 1487, in order to map its chemical distribution in a pixel-by-pixel manner, and to determine the mechanism that is producing inhomogeneities in its metal distribution, as suggested by previous Gemini data. Although gas flows could be responsible in producing flat and inverted metallicity gradients, the role of external gas accretion in producing inhomogeneities in the metal distribution of interacting systems is not yet determined. Then, the project is based in using MUSE data to determine, pixel-by-pixel, i) the metal distribution, ii) ionization mechanisms, iii) physical conditions of the gas, iv) electron densities, v) star formation in NGC 1487. All this information will be used to understand the metal mixing process that is taking place in this small-scale analogue of the Antennae merger. (AU)
