Abstract

It is our proposal a case study of the experience of the social clubs of Rio Claro-SP, between 1900 and 1960, according to the associative practices of "white" leisure associations - Philarmônica (1879), Grêmio Recreativo da Companhia Paulista de Ferro (1896), Grupo Ginástico (1919), of "black" societies - Sociedade Beneficente Recreativa José do Patrocínio (1960) e Tamoio F.C (1951) -as well as the city football teams- Rio Claro F.C (1909) e A.E Velo Clube (1910). It will be our goal the researching of the ways on how have been restructured the social space in line with the experiences of freedom and citizenship disputed in the post-abolitionist period and republican in the city, as well as the transformations in the practices of sociability predominant in the nineteenth century. Our work will be guided by the discussion of social uses of the "race" category in the city, supported by the experiences of "black", "white" and soccer social clubs as one of the possible sources of study on the racialization of spaceand the search for a guarantee of citizenship in Brazil. To carry out the proposal, it will focus on primary sources of research, such as club records, and secondary sources contained in archives and libraries, such as periodicals and bibliography already produced, interviews with members of these clubs. It is a central hypothesis of work that the new social space is built on re-elaborated bases of social exclusion articulated mainly to ethnic-racial practices and discourses to legitimize and guide mechanisms of social domination that arewould occupy constituting whiteness as "a structural place from which the white subject sees others, and himself," finding in the practices of social clubs a practical dimension of this empirical rearticulation of the category race and of the meanings of the experiences of freedom and citizenship in the Republic Brazilian.
