Abstract

The Laboratory of Genetics and bioEnergy (LGE), Institute of Biology, Unicamp, is reference on genomics, biotechnology, bioinformatics and gene regulation in eukaryotes in Brazil and abroad. Best known for studies on cacao and witche's broom disease interaction (plant-pathogen) and the development of yeast enzymes for second-generation ethanol, LGE seeks solutions for a sustainable agriculture in times of global climate change and environmental degradation, with positive impact in the national industry. With science and technology invading our daily lives and politics, economics, and culture agendas, science communication should balance between scientific literacy and critical thinking to foster decision making and social change. In this journalistic research project, we propose the use of techniques derived from the transmedia storytelling to prepare a unique set of materials about LGE work and related topics, exploring formats (text, audio, image) and social media. The diagnosis of communication made by journalists through structured interviews with scientists who have had their research disseminated in traditional and digital media and the elaboration of a communication plan for its official website will foster the development of high-quality content and the public engagement. The exercise of a series of skills and techniques of journalism in accordance with the specialization course in Scientific Journalism (Labjor/Unicamp) and the dialogue with an interdisciplinary team will offer the candidate the possibility to expand her network of contacts, as well as new ways of doing and communicating science.
