The onset and progression of periodontitis occurs as a consequence of host response to microorganisms in the dental biofilm. An inappropriate immune response induces the exaggerated production of inflammatory cytokines and consequently the loss of periodontal insertion and bone resorption. The establishment of alternative strategies with broad beneficial effects has shown promise both in the treatment and prevention of periodontitis. Invariably flavonoids are presented as strategic alternatives for several immuno-inflammatory disorders, because they have a strong anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant potential. This project aims to evaluate whether dietary supplementation with hesperidin, eriocitrin or eriodictiol, modulate or attenuate the inflammatory response and consequent alveolar bone loss in animal model of periodontitis. BALB/c isogenic mice (Mus musculus) will be treated with conventional diet or diets enriched with hesperidin, eriocitrin or eriodictiol at doses of 25 and 50 mg / kg respectively. Following the period of change to the flavonoid-enriched diet, the animals will be submitted to periodontitis induced by the bilateral injection of Escherichia coli 3x / week for 4 weeks. After euthanasia, the profile of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines will be evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), stereometric analysis of periodontal inflammatory process and quantification of bone loss by microCT. It is hoped to propose preliminary strategies capable of collaborating in the interference of the establishment of periodontitis, favoring the maintenance of periodontal and consequently oral health.
