Abstract

Soils from humid tropics are generally acidic, and liming is required in order to raise pH and base saturation, and reduce exchangebale (Al3). Phosphorus (P) is strongly associated with the mineral phase of highly weathered tropical soils, and its plant availability increases with increasing pH. In soils under consolidated no-till (NT), the broadcasted lime occurs without incorporation. In long-term, there is an increase of Soil Organic Matter (SOM) content mostly in the topsoil. The P forms associated to organic Carbon (C) represent a reserve of short and medium-term mineralization, which deserves special attention in soils with low available P, such as oxisols. Little is known about the long-term effects of liming and phosphogypsum application on the organic and inorganic forms of phosphate compounds, as well as the P relationship with the biological activity and its mineralogical interaction with soil iron (Fe) (hydr)oxides. In this project, it is expected to (i) identify changes in the degree of crystallinity and K-edge Fe solid state speciation contained in Fe-(hydr)oxides with high P adsorption capacity from soil by extented X-ray absorption fine structute (EXAFS); (ii) perform the solid state P speciation by X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) and the sequential chemical fractionation of the nutrient to identify changes in the compounds or fractions containing P; and (iii) to relate the organic forms of P obtained by NMR-31P to the activities of enzymes that participate in the P and C cycle, as well as to the soil chemical attributes, available nutrient contents, plant nutritional status and soybean yields after continuous addition of limestone and/or phosphogypsum in an oxisol under NT.
