The aim of this research will be to evaluate the effect of microencapsulated butyric acid replacing the growth promoting antibiotics on mucosa turnover rate, morphometry and lesion scores of the small intestine, as well as oocysts counts of excreta of broilers challenged with Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima and E. tenella. 1,200 one-day-old broiler chicks (Ross) will be randomly allocated in five treatments and six replicates. Treatments will consist of: basal diet (BD); BD + anticoccidial and antibiotic; BD + 0.10% microencapsulated butyric acid; BD + 0.15% microencapsulated butyric acid; BD + 0.20% microencapsulated butyric acid. To evaluate the turnover rate of the intestinal mucosa, the broilers will receive diets predominantly C3. At 16 days of age all broilers will be inoculated with oocysts of Eimeria spp. and, after 21 days, to evaluate the turnover rate after challenge, the broilers will receive a predominantly C4 diet. Mucosa samples will be analyzed isotopically by mass spectrometry before and after challenge. For the morphometric analyzes of the small intestine, at 14, 21 e 42 days of age, segments of the duodenum and jejunum of six birds per treatment will be collected. The lesion scores of the small intestine will be evaluated at 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 19 days after inoculation, and at 4, 5, 6 and 7 days after inoculation, excreta samples will be collected from each experimental unit for oocyst counts. The data will be submitted to analysis of variance by the GLM procedure and, when there is a significant effect, the means will be compared by the Tukey test with 5% of significance. The analysis of turnover of the intestinal mucosa will be performed by the exponential regression method.
