Abstract

Alexandrite has a chrysoberyl type structure with the incorporation of chromium in its lattice, chemical composition BeAl2O4: Cr3+ and contains around of 20 wt.% BeO and 80 wt.% Al2O3. Since these two oxides are commercially used as dosimeters, alexandrite has the potential to be a dosimeter too. Currently, Brazil one of the largest producers of this mineral. The objective of the research is to investigate the effects of beta ionizing radiation in alexandrite using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) technique. Preliminary results for alexandrite mineral presented a linear relationship of OSL intensity (stimulated with blue LEDs) as a function of beta dose, homogeneity in OSL results for different samples and low fading. In this work, it is proposed the development and characterization of natural alexandrite mineral pellets mixed with fluorinated polymer as a proposal for radiation detectors. The research will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Sao Paulo and Federal University of Technology - Parana.
