Abstract

The knowledge of the edaphic fauna mite in Brazil is incipient, mainly in agricultural areas. One of the most common groups of edaphic mites are Mesostigmata, known for potential as agents of biological control of organisms that are harmful to Agriculture. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine the soil Mesostigmata groups found in agricultural crops, with different soil types and management, and also in a natural area, in the Atlantic Forest biome, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, and including description of news taxa (at least five species) and tests with at least two species to verify the potential for biological control of pests and parasites. For this, five collection areas were selected at the FCAV/UNESP Experimental Farm, four of them with agricultural crops, mainly corn and soybean, each one represented a soil with different characteristics and different management practices, and an area with vegetation remnant natural habitat of the Atlantic Forest. In each area and in each collection will be collected 32 samples, 16 of organic matter and 16 with depth 0-10 cm. These collections will be held every two months for a period of two years. In the laboratory, the collected samples will be extracted and the Mesostigmata mites will be identified up to the species level. After all the collections and identification of the mites, analyzes will be performed with abundance and diversity data. From the Mesostigmata collected, if new species are found, five of these will be described. In addition, of the Mesostigmata found, tests will be carried out to verify the potential of at least two species in the control of pests and parasites. The most significant use of biological control with Mesostigmata predatory mites in Brazil depends essentially on the results of basic researches, such as those suggested in the present project, to complement existing knowledge. New studies, especially in these reported incipient areas, could leverage the use of soil predatory mites to control pests and parasites in Brazil. (AU)
