Transcultural adaptation and intra-examiner reliability of scales: functional mobility - FMS and effort perception - Omni for children and adolescents with spina bifida

Abstract

In patients with spina bifida (SB), throughout childhood, the sensorial and motor alterations below the level of the lesion influence negatively daily physical activity performance. Tools that evaluate the functional mobility and the intensity of the physical exercise can help the health professionals to elect therapeutic strategies to increase the level of daily physical activity of this group. However, does not exist tools translated and reliable to Brazilian Portuguese, to evaluate these variables in children and adolescents. This study aims to perform the cross-cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese, test the pre-final version, and reliability of two scales: Functional Mobility (FMS) and OMNI Perceived Exertion for children and adolescents with SB: In addition to the construct validity of OMNI Perceived Exertion for these group. The cross-cultural adaptation will follow the following steps: forward translation into Brazilian Portuguese, translation synthesis, back translation, expert committee, and pre-final version test. The pre-final version of FMS is going to be evaluated in a sub-sample of 20 SB patients followed in the Rehabilitation Center of the Clinical Hospital of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo (CER-HC-FMRP-USP), their respective caregivers and the OMNI version in 15 healthy volunteers, 5 with Cerebral Palsy and 10 with EB followed in the Center of Sports of Ribeirão Preto City, Integrated Rehabilitation Center of the State Hospital of Ribeirão Preto and CER-HC-FMRP-USP. To assess the reliability of the scales and construct validity of OMNI Perceived Exertion, a sample of 50 volunteers (30 healthy and 20 with SB) will be evaluated. Descriptive (SD-mean) and inferential analysis of the data will be performed using the Interclass Correlation Coefficient to evaluate the reproducibility of both scales and the Spearman correlation coefficient for assessing the construct validity of the OMNI scale. An alpha <5% will be considered significant.
