The objective of this study is to investigate the immunological and physiological changes associated with high intensity/short duration exercise in Quarter Horse horses by quantifying the Th1 / Th2 / IL17A cytokine profile. Six barrel racing Quarter Horses will be used. Animals will perform an exercise test (ET) similar to a competition and blood samples will be collected before and at 30, 120 and 240 minutes after the end of the ET. The animals will undergo specific training for their modality during six months and will be submitted to a new ET to evaluate their adaptation to the training. Clinical Relevance: Due to horses natural ability as athletes, a better understanding of the changes resulting from exercise and training, as well as their possible consequences and changes in the body, will provide information and perspectives on the exercise-induced stress response, adaptation to training and modulation of the immune function in horses.
