Abstract

Concrete is one of the materials most used on civil construction, due its characteristics such as easy production, adaptability to various shapes and good mechanical resistance. To ensure that such material has good workability in the production stage and that presents adequate mechanical properties when in hardened state, it is necessary to develop new products that correspond to these characteristics. Recent researches highlight that the development of new materials allowed the inclusion of chemical concepts in the civil construction area for the production of special concretes. Thus, some additives, that used into concrete, are polymeric origin such as hydrogels. These materials are known as high water absorption polymers, and because they are composed of three-dimensionally structured and crosslinked networks, can retain absorbed water and release it controllably over time. Hydrogels, as water control release agents, can contribute to better development of hydration reactions of the cement particles over time and to ensure reduction of internal shrinkage in the microstructure of the cement matrix through the most effective internal cure procedure. Thus, it is proposed in this work the use of polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAm) and polysaccharide carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) to obtain a hybrid composite. This in turn will be subjected to analysis of properties in the fresh state such as consistency and exudation rate, and in hardened state such as hydrallic retraction, water absorption, compressive strength of the paste keeping constant the hydrogel/binder and water/cemnet (w/c) rates. It is intended from the characterization techniques of hybrid material to understand the influence of the hydrogel on cement matrix, acting as an internal curing agent.
