The generation of solid waste originated by the tanning processes of leather has caused environmental impact, these residues come from the process called kneading that leaves the leather with its uniform thickness. The inappropriate disposal of this material can promote, for example, the oxidation of chromium, from Cr3+ to Cr6+, becoming strongly toxic. On the other hand, the proper disposal of the waste (mainly solid waste) in regularized landfills considerably increases the cost of production for the industry. Based on this information, this scientific project presents a method of recycling this industrial waste with the preparation of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites, varying the amount of embedded residue from 10 to 80 phr. The composites will be prepared under high pressure and at temperatures of 160°C. Thus, the objectives of this project are to prepare the compounds and study the crosslinking processes by rheometer analysis according to ASTM D 2084, thermally accelerated aging (ASTM D 573), hardness (ASTM D 2240), density (ASTM D 297 ) and to analyze cross-link densities using two techniques, organic solvent swelling and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), in order to compare the results of both techniques and correlate them with the other results obtained, since the procedure by organic solvents is a destructive method and the NMR analysis is extremely efficient generating excellent qualitative and quantitative results, besides not degrading the material. It is expected that with the insertion of the leather residue the composites present good reproducibility, and maintain the properties of the elastomer. Moreover, the production of the SBR composite / leather waste makes it possible to correctly target the waste in a viable industrial application, thus eliminating a serious environmental, economic and social problem, knowing that Brazil is currently one of the largest producers of the world producing a large amount of solid waste.
