Abstract

Propolis is a resin of viscous consistency produced by Apis mellifera bees from parts of plants, salivary secretions and wax produced by the bees themselves. Propolis has been the subject of several pharmacological studies due to the important biological properties as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, among others, being an important therapeutic alternative, from an economic point of view, because it is pharmacologically efficient and easily to obtain. The main types of propolis are: green, red, yellow and brown. They are thus classified due to the appearance of their extracts and also by the region in which they were collected. Despite the commercial, historical and economic importance of Brazilian propolis, the chemical composition of brown propolis has been scarcely investigated. No papers have been found on its chemical constitution and there are only few evaluations of some biological properties of brown propolis. Therefore, it is proposed to investigate the chemical composition, to develop and validate chromatographic methods for quantification of the brown propolis markers produced by Apis mellifera from Morus alba L. In addition, the cytotoxic properties against tumor cell lines and antimicrobial activities of Brown propolis will be evaluated, since natural products play an important role in the discovery and development of new antiCancer and antimicrobial agents, emphasizing that these properties have already been attributed to some variations of Brazilian propolis. For this purpose, the chemical profile of the hydroalcoholic extract and the brown propolis fractions by HPLC-UV-DAD and GC-MS will be obtained. These extracts will be submitted to different chromatographic techniques, aiming at the isolation of the compounds for use as standards for analytical validation And in the biological evaluations, the chemical structures of the isolated compounds will be elucidated with the aid of physical methods of analysis, such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Mass Spectrometry, a chromatographic method will be developed in CLAE-UV-DAD to quantify the main markers present in the samples of brown propolis produced from Morus alba and then carry out the in vitro assays with extracts of brown propolis and its compounds isolated for cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities.
