Abstract

The aim of the study is to evaluate the phase, chemical and cristalline structure of high-plasticity cements (MTA HP, Biodentine, MTA Flow, MTA Flow + 5% ZnO and an experimental tricalcium silicate cement) using x-ray diffractometry (XRD). Hydrated and non-hydrated cements will be evaluated. The samples will be prepared in the Dental School of Piracicaba. For the analysis of the non-hydrated cements, the powders will be inserted directly in the sample holder of XRD and compacted. For the analysis of hydrated cements, disc-shaped specimens 15 mm in diameter and 2 mm high will be prepared and allowed to set at 37ºC and 95% relative humidity for 24 hours. The samples will be immersed separately in HBSS for 28 days. After this period, they will be dried, vacuum dissecated and crushed to a very fine powder using an agate mortar and pestle. The powder will be adapted in the sample holder of XRD. The diffractometer (Rigaku, Tokyo, Japan) will operate using Cu K± radiation at 40 mA and 45 kV and the detector set to rotate between 15° and 45°, with a sampling width of 0.05° and scan speed of 1°/min at 15 revs/min using the Bragg Brentano method. Phase identification will be accomplished using a search-match software utilizing ICDD database (International Centre for Diffraction Data, Newtown Square, PA, USA). The results will be described accordingly to the diffraction patterns presented by each material. (AU)
