This work is part of the thematic project "Circulatory support in pediatric patients: ventricular assist device and extracorporeal oxygenation" (FAPESP: 12/50283-6), and aims at applying the Topological Optimization Method (TOM) to support the development of a Device Ventricular Assist (DVA). The idea to be addressed in this project relies on linear peristaltic devices observed in models of primitive cardiac vessels, which are, by definition, a type of unidirectional biological valve. In this project, a new concept based on structural instability behavior of the wall will be explored as a tool to store and release elastic energy to mimic the effect of linear pulsatile pumping. The MOT formulation of the inverse problem will be based on the concept of bistable compliant mechanisms to reach a monolithic structure, i.e. without the presence of joints or pins allowing the development of a miniaturized device that can be made through additive manufacture. The fluid domain will be modeled by a pressure function to simplify the analysis. The structural topology representation will be based on the SIMP material model which at the end of the optimization process will be interpreted using a level set function to evaluate the results.
