Abstract

In epilepsy, psychiatric disorders may have higher impact on quality of life than the frequency of seizures, even considering the drug-resistant epilepsies. In general, the impact of mood disorders, especially depression, is better known than anxiety disorders. The anxiety disorder, as well as the anxiety symptoms have been neglected in epilepsy. Also, the impact of anxiety and depressive symptoms on quality of life in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, a drug-responsive epilepsy, is unknown. However, it is accepted that patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and psychiatric disorders, broadest sense, have worse lifelong prognosis. In this study, we aim to evaluate the impact of anxiety and depressive symptoms on quality of life and social adjustment in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. For this purpose, we will study 30 patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy previously diagnosed and followed at the Cognitive and Psychiatric Comorbidities in Epilepsy Research Group of the Institute of Psychiatry, Hospital das Clínicas, FMUSP. Specific questionnaires will be applied to anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as for quality of life and social functioning. This Scientific Initiation project is linked to the Master Degree Project of the student Maria Luisa Maia Nobre de Paiva entitled "The impact of cognitive rehabilitation in executive functions and social adaptation of patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy," and the Doctorate Degree Project entitled "impulsivity and executive dysfunction: study of patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and their families" (approved by the Ethics Committee for Research Project Analysis of the Hospital of the USP Medical School Clinic - Research Protocol 2016 / 03976-7) , of the same research line (CNPq 308 968 / 2015-8; 307262 / 2011-1; 307 105 / 2006-7; FAPESP 06 / 56971-0, 07 / 52110-3).
