Comparative study of methods for evaluation of depth of cure of restoring composites

Abstract

The purpose of this study will be to compare two methods to evaluate the depth of cure (DC) of restorative composites and if the extension of the light activation time increases the DC of the composite resins. Two bulk-fill composites will be tested (Tetric Evoceram Bulk Fill, Ivoclar Vivadent e Filtek One Bulk Fill, 3M ESPE) and two conventional composites (Tetric N-Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent e Filtek Z350 XT, 3M ESPE). The two methods that will be compared: 1- ISO 4049 test and 2- dissolution with organic solvent. Cylindrical samples will be made from the light activation of the composites (according to the manufacturer's recommendation and double the time), which will be inserted in matrices with dimensions of 5 mm internal diameter and 13 mm high. Will be obtained 160 samples, 40 for each composite (n = 10), which are analyzed by both methods. In the ISO 4049 test method, the uncured resin will be removed manually with a plastic spatula and the length of the samples measured with a digital caliper for DC calculation. In the other method, the uncured resin will also be removed and the samples immersed in organic solvent (acetone) for 48 hours for further measurement of the DC in the remnent of the sample. The analysis of DC data will be performed by ANOVA (three factors: composite type, light activation time and type of method) and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05).
