To investigate whether genes expressed in the skeletal muscle are also expressed in circulating neutrophils of Quarter Horses after an acute high intensity exercise of short duration session (Barrel racing) in two moments (before training and after 6 months of training).Animals: 6 Quarter Horses, both sexes. None of the horses had received specific training 6 months prior to the study for the Barrel racing modality.Material and methods: Samples of blood and tissue of the Gluteus medius muscle will be obtained before [M0 (before exercise) and 4 hours (M1) after the end of the exercise] and after 6 months of specific training for barrel racing [M2 (before exercise) and 4 hours (M3) after the end of the exercise]. Expression of the following genes gamma-actin 1, mitochondrial transcription factor A; 1-alpha peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor and Toll-like-4 receptor (TLR4) will be measured in Gluteus medius and circulating neutrophil samples. Histopathological examination will be performed to verify the presence of neutrophils / leukocytes in the musculature and immunohistochemical examination to verify if the recruitment of inflammatory cells to the musculature contributes, and to what extent, to the coexpression of gene networks between the skeletal muscle and the different types of circulating leukocytes.Clinical Relevance: Because of its natural ability as an athlete, a better understanding of the changes resulting from exercise and training, as well as its possible consequences and changes in the body, will provide new insights into the complex molecular mechanisms of exercise-induced stress response, adaptation to training and modulation of the immune response in horses.
