Abstract

Propolis is a resinous product produced by Apis mellifera bees from exudates and plant tissues with addition of salivary secretions and bees' wax. Its composition depends on several factors, such as time of collection, plant species and flora of the region. Several biological properties have already been reported for propolis. The chemical composition of brown propolis produced from the species Eucalyptus spp has been little studied, as well as its antimicrobial activity. Considering both the medicinal and the economic potential of Eucalyptus propolis, the phytochemical study is proposed by obtaining hydroalcoholic extracts, followed by fractionation by liquid-liquid partition with organic solvents and isolation of the major compounds using different chromatographic modalities such as (CLV), open columns with silica gel, recrystallizations and semipreparative HPLC (HPLC / DAD). The isolated substances will be analyzed by HPLC-UV-DAD on a Polar-RP analytical column and identified using spectroscopic methods, mainly NMR and spectrometric. The isolated compounds will be evaluated for antimicrobial activity in vitro against Gram positive, Gram negative bacteria and yeasts.
