Abstract

Cervical cancer has high rates of incidence and mortality and its progression depends on genetic characteristics and interactions with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Treatment for this type of cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, but these methods are highly invasive, so some plants have awaked scientific interest because of their potential antitumorigenics. Among them, Piper nigrum popularly known as black pepper, is one of the most known species due to its high commercialization and important medicinal properties, such as antitumorigenic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antidepressant potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential antitumorigenic effect of lignans in cervical cancer cells, observing how this herbal medicine acts and how these alterations can participate in the tumor process. For this, the cell line HeLa (uterine cervix adenocarcinoma) treated with the total extract of P. nigrum in three different concentrations (10, 50 and 100ug / mL) for 4, 24, 48 and 72h will be used to evaluate the morphology, cell proliferation, by the growth curve assay, cytotoxicity and cell viability, by the MTS assay and the cell migration, by the transwell assay. With this, we will have new data of Piper nigrum's mechanism of action in cervical tumorigenesis.
