Survey on the use of supply chain performance measurement systems

Abstract

The majority of the intellectual production on performance measurement systems to support supply chain management is theoretical with great emphasis on the design of structural frameworks like the SCOR or modifications on existing models as Balanced Scorecard. Frequently, the scope is the first tear of the supply chain with the focus on the suppliers. The performance measurement information use has attracted few scholars' attention and most of the papers concentrate on the internal supply chain. Otherwise, the true performance measurement system impact happens when the decision makers use the performance information provided by such systems to support their decision making. Hence, the use of information is one critical aspect of performance measurement systems. Focusing on the literature about the business performance measurement systems, we observe the same lack of scholars' attention to the use of information. The focus is on the purposes of using performance measurement systems. Therefore, this research proposal aims to identify empirically what is the information about performance the supply chain professionals use to analyze and compare with proposed performance measurement system in the literature. The research design is an electronic survey applied to professionals involved in supply chain management including those in upstream as well downstream of different supply chains. Survey research method allows targeting populations in a wide geographic area. The target population is the certificated supply chain professionals by associations as APICS and Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals in the United States and ASLOG in Brazil. There is no similar research design in the literature on performance measurement systems for supply chain management. It will allow comparison between different populations like US and Brazilians, and between the associations. The expected result is a broad perspective on use of information on performance by supply chain decision makers and a comparison with the literature of performance measurement systems for supply chain management.
