Indigenous reduction in the Upper Amazon (1686-1757): agreements, processes of displacement and territorialization of the omaguas, yurimaguas, aysuares and ybanomas

Abstract

The overall aim of this project is to understand the agreements and processes of indigenous reductions carried out by Jesuit missionaries in the Upper Amazon, a frontier disputed by Portuguese and Spanish Crowns, between the years 1686 and 1757. Thus, this work was organized in three specific objectives: we first intend to investigate the bibliography and primary sources about the process of Spanish colonization in the archives and libraries situated in Seville and Madrid cities; besides, it will be necessary to raise and analyze the documentation produced by Jesuits and secular fathers in religious archives located in Rome, Italy. Our second purpose is to develop methodological strategies for the study of the history of native people who were evangelized in the context of increased exploitation of indigenous manpower by Spanish encomenderos and by Portuguese slave traders. Finally, we seek to strengthen ties and share research experiences between different study fields by presenting the results of our research at the academic events regularly organized by the departments of History of Pablo de Olavide University and the University of Seville.
