Milk composition is favorable to the development of microorganisms during production, storage or even distribution, and E. coli is widely found in both milk and dairy products. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of this bacterium can be considered a negative effect on animal production and may even pose a public health risk. The objective of this study is to verify the resistance of E. coli strains to different antibiotics. Two hundred twenty-five strains isolated from samples collected at different points in dairy plants (bulk tank milk, floor, packing machine and molds) and farms (tank, milkers' hands before and after milking, milk of individual cows, pre-and post-milking teat cups, and water from the property) of the Southeast region of Brazil. Disc diffusion technique will be performed, analyzing the susceptibility to first-line and second-line antibiotics recommended by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Enterobacteriaceae: amikacin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, ampicillin, ampicillin-sulbactam, cefazolin, cefepime, cefotaxime, cefotetan, cefoxitin, ceftazidime-avibactam, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, doripenem, ertapenem, gentamycin, imipenem, levofloxacin, meropenem, piperacillin-tazobactam, tobramycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The results are expected to monitor the evolutionary E. coli antibiotic resistance associated with milk production.
