Abstract

This postdoctoral work aims at developing a computational platform in the process simulator Aspen Plus to design and evaluate from technical and economic perspectives (e.g. profitability, energy efficiency) the different biorefinery options to be studied in the thematic project. This research framework will additionally allow to: a) assess integration risks of new processes to existing mills; b) optimize the concepts and processes of new biorefineries, taking into account that the optimization of the short term options may lock out better options down the road; c) characterize technology bottlenecks; and d) benchmark the development stage of new technologies for production of biofuels and chemicals from sugarcane feedstocks.
