The ant collection of the University of São Paulo Zoology Museum is a reference center in the safeguard and development of research of Formicidae, and for this reason an important repository of the neotropical myrmecofauna. As the state of São Paulo is a hub that congregates museums, universities and a large number of researchers, a considerable number of the material deposited in the collection comes from various studies and collections conducted in the state. However, the state lacks an initiative that presents a current panorama on the knowledge of ants and a taxonomic list of the species found in the distinct biomes and municipalities. This information is the basis of biological knowledge for the development of research aimed at recognizing factors that threaten biodiversity and the design of conservation projects. (AU)
