Abstract

Although the Pantanal is the largest continental wetland of the planet, there are few data on the production and emission of GHG for this area. Its contribution to the determination of the global GHG emissions balance is generally estimated from measures carried out in the Amazon or Equatorial Africa in non-alkaline environments. The objective of this doctorate, inserted in the thematic project "Climate change and environmental impacts in wetlands of the Pantanal (Brazil): quantification, control factors and long-term forecast", is the characterization and quantification of GHG emissions by the region of Nhecolândia, one of the five sub-regions of the Mato Grosso Pantanal. This subregion is characterized by the presence of an important lacustrine system, whose waters vary from fresh water composition, oligosaline to hypersaline. These types of ponds probably reflect distinct geochemical and biogeochemical behaviors. Measurements of CO2, CH4 and N2O emission will be performed over 24-hour cycles at intervals of 2 hours in floating chambers. Complementary chemical and isotopic analyzes will be carried out in the waters and sediments of the lagoons to help in understanding the behavior of the gases emitted. Microbiological studies will be available to support the interpretations carried out in the doctorate. The annual GHG emission balances will be modeled using the VENSIM Pro dynamic systems model, considering different climatic hypotheses for the study area.
