Effects of training over the acid base balance in horses

Abstract

Acid Base Balance is one among many factors modified by exercise. There are still few studies that evaluate the effect of training on the Acid Base Balance in horses. Therefore, this project is intended to evaluate the metabolic responses responsible for the maintenance of the Acid Base Balance of the blood of equines during Standard Exercise Tests (SET), as well as to determine how does the training affects the factors to be analysed. The study will refer to ten Arabian Purebred horses, six castrated male and four female, whose ages vary between four and nine years old, with average weight of 380 kg, from the stud owned by the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias/UNESP (Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences University/State University of São Paulo), located in Jaboticabal's Campus. The horses will initially get through an adaptation period to the treadmill in the Equine Sports Medicine Laboratory where they will, after the acclimatization, perform a Progressive Effort Test preceded of induction of lactatemia, in order to determine their physical condition. During the progressive effort test, blood samples are going to be collected for hemogasometric evaluation of Na+, K+, Cl-, pH, lactate and pC02, as well as biochemical evaluation of total plasma proteins. The speed related to the concentration of 1,5 mmol/L of lactate (v1,5) during the Progressive Effort Test is going to be used as a basis to the six week training at treadmills. By the end of the training period, a new Progressive Effort Test with the same specifications previously made is going to take place, in order to evaluate the improvements in physical conditioning. The values determined by the hemogasometric and biochemical evaluations are going to be used for the calculation of the Strong Ions Difference (SID) and the calculation of the concentration of non-volatile weak acids (Atot). The values obtained at all of the Progressive Effort Tests are going to be submitted to statistical analysis for posterior discussion.
