Abstract

In Brazil, there are important arboviruses capable of producing human disease, such as Dengue virus (DENV), Yellow Fever virus (YFV) and Zika Virus (ZIKV). They are transmitted by the bite of hematophagous mosquitoes, mainly of the genus Aedes, present in practically the whole Brazilian territory. The symptoms developed by DENV or ZIKV infection include abrupt fever, joint and muscle pain. In yellow fever, the symptoms may be more severe, including fulminant hepatitis, renal failure, hemorrhage and shock. Dengue fever and yellow fever may develop as high lethality haemorrhagic fevers and the Zika virus can cause severe congenital disease. Therefore, these viruses that are causing epidemics in Brazil, are of great importance for public health, requiring vigorous research and action for control. Considering the relevance of such arboviruses, we propose to study epitopes in Flavivirus proteins, mapping them with a microarray chip, a new technology. After recognition, these epitopes will be targets of studies that will include its usage in diagnosis methods of diagnosis and production of monoclonal antibodies for acute phase diagnosis, immunopathology studies, analysis of antibodies directed against the epitopes studied for viral neutralizing capacity or ADE (Antibody Dependent Enhancement). Also, epitopes will be tested as vaccine candidates and antibodies as therapeutic candidates. Eventually, the antigenic epitopes of Flaviviruses discovered or the antibodies raised against them, may become commercial products and be patented. (AU)
