Advanced numerical multiphase flow modeling

Abstract

This project aims at developing advanced models for multiphase flow that account for cavitation effects in liquids with a disperse gas phase. The modeling framework to be developed is basedon an Eulerian multifluid and multigroup approach for the polydisperse bubble-liquidmixture, coupled with the Rayleigh-Plesset equation for the individual bubble dynamics. The host researcher (Prof. Carrica) has done seminal contributions in the area and is now workingon the issue as part of a coordinated effort to reduce uncertainty in technological applications of CFD. Though Eulerian multifluid models already exist, the fast transients with large volume changes that take place in cavitation are outside their range of validity. The problem to be addressed is of great interest for the simulation of many technological systems that range from ship hydrodynamics, especially propellers, to lubricated joints and bearings. During the stay, a parallel project will be launched with Prof. David Stewart on the modeling of biological flows. Specifically, Prof. Stewart's group aims at developing and justifying a model for mucus flow in the airways, an importantissue in certain diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
