Abstract

Verifying the structure of secondary xylem comparing root and stem is important as the anatomy is related both to the functional differences of each organ and to the microenvironment where each organ is located, root in the soil and stem exposed to the atmosphere. The pattern of the features of secondary xylem of root and stem in Annona crassiflora Mart. (Annonaceae), object of this study, might or might not be the same that occurs with other species. Therefore, the goal of this study is to verify if there are anatomical differences in the secondary xylem comparing root and stem in Annona crassiflora from cerrado sensu stricto, relating this with functional adaptations of each organ, root and stem, as well as relate these organs adaptations to the microenvironment where they are located. We have collected the material in a private reserve of cerrado sensu stricto located in Fazenda Santa Catarina, in Rubião Júnior district, in Botucatu, state of São Paulo. We selected three trees of the species and we collected samples from root and stem of each tree using a non-destructive method. The samples will be prepared following the usual techniques in wood anatomy. This study will allow us to understand if there are anatomical differences of secondary xylem between root and stem in A. crassiflora and relate these differences, if found, with probable functional and ecological adaptations of this species in Cerrado.
