Representations and discourses about the Cyclades islands and Paros: a parallel between the textual sources and materiality in archaic and classical period

Abstract

The present research aims to investigate the perception of classical Greek authors, Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon, in relation to the Cyclades Islands from the VI century BC to IV BC and draw a parallel from the analysis of the material culture found in the archaeological sites of Paros island. In this way, the project intends to analyze how these islands have been represented over time, in the previous context to the Athenian hegemony, during the alignment with the Persians, in the Medical Wars and in the Cyclades revival by Athens and what the material culture can reveal about the socioeconomic transformations throughout the period. To do this, we will use the concepts that involve the notion of insularity, which is applicable to the Cyclades islands, to question and criticize the abstractions and reflect on their perception and importance in the Aegean Sea. The present study is part of the research carried out in the Laboratório de Estudos sobre a Cidade Antiga (Labeca), based in the Museo de Arqueologia e Etinologia of the University of São Paulo. (AU)
